The debut album from Amycanbe is a warm, intimate collection of songs that balance sweetness with depth, marking the arrival of one of the most distinctive new acts on the European music scene.
Formed in Ravenna, Italy in 2003, the band quickly built a strong following at home, earning widespread acclaim for their self-titled debut EP — a set of raw, home-recorded tracks. Praised by critics and highlighted as one of the year’s standout releases, it wasn’t long before attention spread across Europe, leading to tour support slots with artists such as Skin of Skunk Anansie.
Amycanbe are Francesca Amati (vocals), Mattia Mercuriali (guitar), Marco Trinchillo (acoustic guitar and drums), and Paolo Gradari (trumpet, guitar, keys). Drawing on influences ranging from Aphex Twin to The Flaming Lips and Tom Waits, they have shaped a sound that is both eclectic and immediately recognisable.
Much of their early material was written and recorded during a period of isolation in an Alpine retreat, where the band immersed themselves fully in the creative process. That focus is evident in the album’s atmosphere and cohesion.
Released on Dancing Turtle in October 2007, Being A Grown-Up Sure Is Complicated showcases the band’s range, from the folky warmth of Down Under to the driving energy of Burning, alongside the introspective Heal and the genre-shifting Little Dog. A UK tour followed, introducing their music to a wider audience and cementing their growing reputation.
