Icon Freeye is the alias of Philippe Hemedy, a DJ, filmmaker and fashion designer born and raised in Zaire, central Africa. His work moves fluidly between music, image and fashion, each rooted in the same restless curiosity about the world’s cultures and the sounds that define them.
As a DJ, Icon Freeye has spent decades immersed in global sounds including afrobeat, jazz, dub and soul, before finding his spiritual home in roots reggae, a genre he now specialises in. He has played across Europe and further afield, including Brazil, Russia and India. Alongside his DJ work, he has documented his musical and cultural explorations on film, travelling through West Africa to bear witness to the continent’s extraordinary musical traditions, its people and the cultures that have shaped his own artistic identity.
He is also the founder of African Weave Attitude, a fashion label that brings the same cross-cultural perspective to design. Based in Turin, Italy, Icon Freeye runs his own 4.3 soundsystem from the city, taking his roots reggae selections across the globe, earning a reputation as one of the most distinctive selectors on the international circuit.
